\r\nThe white highlights (and sparsely applied silver) help to give this painting a sense of both movement and stillness, and is one of my favourites of my own work.

(In fact this was originally conceived as a completely monochrome set, but I had doubts as to whether I could sustain the idea for an entire series).
\r\nHere the main sections in white contrast well with the two-tone blue background, which creates a “glowing” effect – something which I’ve often explored since.
\r\nThere is also a certain graceful movement about this piece: the main sections seem to “dance” around each other.

\r\nThis was my first work on canvas, after years of working on paper, and another piece that contrasts strong background colours with subtle tones on top. It was also around this time that I began to experiment with three-dimensional imagery.
\r\nThis is one of the few works which utilise a metallic colour blended into the background and the sparse gold highlights serve to emphasise the foreground, rather than to overpower it.

\r\nThis was the only set to include works on canvas board, of which this is an example. (See also Untitled No.77<\/a> and Untitled No.84<\/a>). The main sections in purple appear to be descending (or for that matter, ascending) at a slow, graceful pace and the work as a whole has a certain delicacy.
\r\nThe “double-background” approach adopted for this series is used especially well here, in a painting which is another personal favourite.

\r\nThis is a rather dynamic painting, featuring bold colours, depth, space and movement.
\r\nThe light sandy browns and fiery reds contrast well with the dark blue of the main background while the white of the centre background provides added “lift” - making this a uniquely vibrant piece.

\r\nOf all my work, this is probably the most starkly contrasted, yet for me contains a certain elegance.
\r\nIt has a glowing, pulsating quality, one which was achieved by adding an extra layer of white to selected highlights and “fading out” from either one or both ends. (Also, the violet in the centre background seems to emphasise this effect).

\r\nThese new pieces, from 2010 and 2011, were conceived as a continuation from my previous work, as well as a development from it, especially in the areas of space and dynamics.
\r\nThis painting illustrates this particularly well: the bright pinkish and sand-coloured highlights contrast very effectively against the black of the top half of the background and although there’s a lot going on here, there’s no clutter – there is “breathing space” amid the action.

\r\nThis was achieved by applying multiple layers of myriad smaller sections, and by having selected parts emerge from one level of the background into the next (or emerging into the foreground).
\r\nThe end result is for me one of my most unusual works, which successfully combines depth, detail and space.

\r\nFor this piece I wanted to explore contrast a little more, with numerous light green and pale brown light sources.
\r\nThis worked very well against the two-tone grey of the background, creating an almost luminous effect.
\r\nI also wanted to continue playing with depth, (A feature of this series) illustrated here with the two horizontal sections emerging from one layer to the next, and “wrapping” around selected light brown\/green sections.
\r\nSelected light green highlights were also added to sections in the background, to create small glimpses of light, which add to the overall “luminosity”.

\r\nThis piece experiments with space and structure, with some sections densely textured while others are left relatively sparse.
\r\nIt also experiments with depth, e.g. the highlighting in the main section, which builds up layer by layer, but with smaller details applied each time, creating a “shimmering effect, which appears to be shining from a great distance. (as well as developing the idea - a theme for this series - of sections appearing to emerge from one layer to the next).
\r\nFor me, this is one of my most unusual, yet effective pieces
